Chimney fires happen faster, hotter and more violently than most people expect. A small ember meets a thick layer of creosote, and within seconds the flue is roaring. The damage is often serious: cracked flue liners, warped heaters, smoke-damaged interiors — sometimes much worse.
Why prevention is everything
You can't safely "put out" a chimney fire once it's properly started. The only reliable strategy is preventing the conditions that allow one to occur — which means controlling creosote build-up before it ignites.
The four pillars of prevention
One: annual professional cleaning. Two: burning seasoned, dry hardwood — never green or damp wood. Three: running your heater hot at least once a day to keep flue temperatures up and creosote formation down. Four: an annual safety check to catch failing seals, damaged baffles or restricted caps.
What the appointment involves
We carry out a full sweep or flue clean, inspect the cap and cowl, and assess creosote build-up to give you a clear picture of risk. We'll also talk through your burning technique and firewood — small changes that make a big difference.
